An observation leading to the determination of an upper limit to the abundance of gaseous CH4 on Neptune's largest satellite, Triton, are reported. The spectrum of Triton between wavelengths of 6000 and 9000 A was recorded in June 1980 at the ESO 1.52-m telescope at La Silla at a spectral resolution of 6 A. No trace of CH4 absorption at 6190, 7250, 7900 or 8900 A is observed. Analysis of the measurement uncertainty in relation to the 7250-A band, the strongest band in the region of maximal spectral signal to noise ratio, results in an upper limit of 3.5 m-am for the gaseous CH4 abundance in the atmosphere of Triton. This result is noted to be in disagreement with positive detections of CH4 absorption in the infrared.
