The fast-reconnection (Petschek) mechanism is given new quantitative treatment and it is shown that its application in dynamo theory requires a different form of induction equation from that currently in use. The discussion of the amplification of magnetic fields in eddies is extended to the wider problem of the net effect of such amplification together with the decay caused by the pseudodiffusive effect.
