Rho Leonis is one of the best studied early B supergiants for which no H-alpha emission has been reported before the current investigation. Being bright and well placed, Rho Leo is a standard for the H-beta and other photometric systems. The spectroscopic analysis of Rho Leo shows that rapid, extreme changes in the equivalent width of strong lines arising from a dominant ionization state (Si III) occur at apparently erratic intervals. 'Episodes' of both line weakening (factor of 2) and line strengthening occasionally occur, perhaps with equal frequency. These changes occur without variations in radial velocity. The line weakening is invariably accompanied by a change in shape toward a more U-shaped profile. The changes described occur in the same manner on short and long time scales.
