The observational parameters sigma0 and q0 are expressed in terms of the redshift and its time derivatives for Robertson-Walker universes consisting of a mixture of noninteracting dust and blackbody radiation. Since the redshift is free of evolutionary corrections, a study of its time evolution deserves serious consideration as a workable alternative to the standard approach in observational cosmology.
