The nature of gamma-ray bursts is discussed within the framework of a thermonuclear model whereby gamma-ray bursts are due to thermonuclear flashes in the surface layers of accreting stars. It is assumed that gamma-ray burst sources as distinguished from X-ray bursters correspond to neutron stars with strong magnetic fields. It is shown that the thermonuclear energy released may be effectively transported to the outer layers by MHD waves, in particular by Alfven waves, which would explain a very short growth time and rapid variations of some gamma-ray bursts.
