We examined X-ray spectral and timing properties of bright ultra-luminous X-ray sources (ULXs) in nearby galaxies with XMM-Newton archival data. For those sources with prominent thermal components, a correlation was found between the X-ray luminosity and the thermal temperature except three special objects whose spectra could also be fitted by a single Comptonization model. Timing noise above the Poisson level was detected from eight sources. We discussed interpretation of these ULXs as accreting intermediate mass black holes.
