We present preliminary results from the first three years of the ESSENCE project, a supernova survey aimed at better constraining the equation of state parameter of the dark energy. We present initial photometry from the MOSAIC II imager at the CTIO 4m for ˜80 supernovae at redshifts of 0.2 < z < 0.8. We discuss characteristics of the sample of objects found, and assess the impact of various sources of systematic error on the determination of cosmological distances using these data.
