Relations between variations in the rotational angular velocity of the earth and solar activity are examined. Spectra of the monthly mean Wolf sunspot number for the period 1944-1976 and of the monthly mean geomagnetic Ap index for the period 1932-1977 are analyzed. Cyclic variations with periods of 0.5, 3.3, 6.6 and 11 years are identified, the first three of which are found to correspond both in period and in phase to previously observed angular velocity variations. It is concluded that variations in the earth's rotation rate are dependent through some unknown mechanism of solar activity.
