Observations of filaments with optical emission lines have been associated with cooling flows in clusters of galaxies. The mechanisms usually considered for ionization and heating of the gas in those filaments cannot provide a good explanation for such observations. In this work we study the effects of the magnetic reconnection as an excitation mechanism of filaments in cooling flows. We use hydrodynamical time-dependent calculations to follow the evolution of cooling condensations until the phase of optical line emission. The time scales involved in such a condensation process is of the order of some times 106 years. We analyze the cases where the magnetic field is absent; those in which it is present but is passive (i.e., it acts just as magnetic pressure); and those in which it is present and the reconnection process contributes as an exciting mechanism. We find some problems to follow the evolution of the filaments when the magnetic pressure is taken into account; after time intervals greater than 3 x 106 years it appears there are some fluctuations which are not physically expected; these problems and possible interpretations to them are also discussed. We obtain a much better agreement with observational results of emission line intensities and line ratios when the active participation of the magnetic field through reconnection is taken into account.
