When Robert Lagemann retired from professorial services in the Department in 1977, he undertook to prepare a history of the department from the beginnings of the University in 1875 to his death in July 1994. His almost completed manuscript was deposited with the department for final preparation for publication. My report on this manuscript will discuss the contributions of L. C. Garland (1875--1895), Professor of Physics and Astronomy and Chancellor in establishing the department, the origins of the distinguished career in Astronomy of E. E. Barnard (1884--1887) the work of John ``Dynamo" Daniel (1888--1939) and the exceptional leadership of Francis G. Slack (1928--1951) who led the department into modern times, brought Max Delbrück to Vanderbilt, and helped found SESAPS and ORINS. The work of Slack's successors including Lagemann and others will be described in expanding the faculty, physical facilities, educational and research programs and research support.
