Gamma ray astronomy provides a diagnostic tool to study high energy processes in the Universe. NASA's Compton Gamma Ray Observatory completed the first full sky survey in gamma rays on 17 Nov. 1991. The highlights of this first observation period of Compton are presented. Special topics are the mysterious gamma ray bursts, the surprising large number of active galactic nuclei found, the 511 keV and 1.8 Mev line emissions from the galactic plane, the detection of the Co-57 line from supernova 1987A, some pulsar results and observations of gamma rays and neutrons from solar flares. Emphasis is given to present combined results of all four instruments on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory.
