Scientific paper

Radiation from solar flares is reviewed. Particular attention is given to temporal variations that may give clues to the details of the energy release processes in flares. Hard X-ray and microwave bursts type III bursts and spike bursts are discussed. In each case, after a review of the observations, their standard interpretation is summarized. The present state of the theory of the energy release in solar flares is discussed, with emphasis on the implications of fine structures in the observed bursts.
