Seventeen sources included in the NRAO-CSIRO-MIT survey (Wilson et al. 1970a) have been surveyed for the He 109α emission. The line was observed in all sources investigated except the two components G0.5-0.0 and G0.7-0.0 in the Sagittarius region. The mean value of the helium-to-hydrogen ration in all H II regions which show emission of the He 109α line is ρ(He 109α)/ρ(He 109α) = N(He+)/N(H+) = 0.088. The scatter in the individual data is large owing to the low signal-to-noise ration of the observations. There appears to be no correlation between the observed abundance ratio N(He+)/N(H+) and deviations from LTE, as characterized by the observed ratio of integrated line profiles ρ(H137β)/ρ(H 109α); this supports earlier conclusions that deviations from LTE affect two adjacent lines of He and H in the same way. The C 109α line was detected in three HII regions.
