Scientific paper

The Muon Spectrometer is an essential part of the ATLAS Detector at the LHC. It is used both for triggering and for momentum measurements of the muons. The four different technologies used for the Muon chambers as well as their expected performance are described. Furthermore, the ATLAS sensitivity for the SM and the MSSM Higgs bosons decaying into muons is reviewed. Emphasis is given in the expected discovery potentials from the first year of running.
