Synthetic parameters have been determined from observations defining symmetrical light curves of the five W-type contact binary systems SW Lac, U Peg, RZ Com, AM Leo, and AH Vir. In addition, a second observed light curve of each system was studied. The difference in the shape of the light curves for a given system can be explained by one or two subluminuous regions on the larger component. Such a region may be caused by circumstellar material or by a starspot area. The position in longitude is well determined. In every case the absolute value of the latitude can be found but only for SW Lac can the sign of the latitude be obtained without ambiguity.
