The meteorological conditions that affect astronomical observing quality on Mauna Kea are discussed. Prevailing weather systems produce temporal and spatial variations in the atmospheric conditions that influence the observing quality. Cirrus-cloud generation and turbulence in the free atmosphere are linked to synoptic scale weather phenomena. The structure of turbulence in the surface boundary layer is related to mesoscale circulation features and local effects.
