The contributions of sunspot and faculae to the luminosity fluctuations occurring over the lifetime of a solar active period from June to November 1982 are estimated. The estimates are based on direct photometric observations of irradiance fluctuations and modelled 'proxy' fluctuations derived from published sunspot and calcium plage areas. It is found that the total facular energy excess is between 70 and 120 percent of the sunspot deficit of about 10 to the 37th erg. Estimates of the energy budget of solar active periods can be used to characterize the nature of sunspots and the solar dynamo. A table showing the integration (over angle) of the photometric and proxy irradiance fluctuations of a sequence of active regions in a solar activity complex, is provided.
