The true nature of 'coincidence objects', closely spaced groups of two or more identical spectra identified during the visual inspection of objective-prism plates with widened spectra, is explored on the basis of a statistical analysis of observational data. Four probable explanations are considered: (1) relatively widely separated binary systems in the open field, (2) 'optical' double stars formed by two members of a cluster, (3) very poor 'microclusters', and (4) cluster remnants. It is found that the present observational data base does not permit physically meaningful distinctions between open clusters and multiple star systems.
