Published results of direct measurements of NO concentration in the D-region are analyzed. It is shown that the most characteristic feature of the vertical distribution of NO concentration is the presence of a minimum in the mesopause region. Direct measurements are compared with theoretical estimates of NO concentration according to the ion composition. It is established that the NO concentration increases significantly and the NO concentration profile changes substantially during ionospheric disturbances.
