Among the present observations of the core of the BL Lac-type object Mrk 501, those obtained by VLBI exhibit a 10-pc one-sided jet structure that is grossly misaligned with the previously known 40 kpc structure of this source, while observations obtained by VLA show that the change in alignment must occur within 40 pc of the nucleus. These results are discussed in light of the work by Mufson et al. (1984), which shows that the overall spectrum of Mrk 501 is probably best described by a model consisting of an inhomogeneous relativistic jet inclined at the relatively large angle of 23 deg to the line of sight, with a small Doppler beaming factor. It is concluded that, if this model is correct, the large misalignment and brightness in the core of Mrk 501 have yet to be ascribed to intrinsic effects. Jets may brighten and deflect due to collisions with ambient material.
