The standard boundary conditions invoked at discontinuities in the physical parameters when treating the free oscillations of a self-gravitating model sphere should be modified if such a boundary represents a phase transition. Appropriate new boundary conditions are derived for an arbitrarily stratified model, and their applicability is discussed. With the new conditions the normal-mode spectrum is calculated for a model of Jupiter. The discontinuity modes of oscillation, which concentrate at the hydrogen phase boundary, are seriously affected. The remainder of the theoretical oscillation spectrum retains the same structure although the periods may lengthen by several percent.
