A suggestive model is introduced wherein certain quantities in Friedmann models are treated like their thermodynamic counterparts: temperature, entropy, Gibbs energy, and so on. Within this model, changes in the Bianchi symmetry of the universe are interpreted as first- or second- order phase transitions. This model also provides a new way of determining the symmetry of the universe. The results obtained are independent of the details of the local equation of state. However, two specific cases are also discussed to demonstrate some of the properties of the model.
