A theoretical interpretation of the Σ-D relation is presented for supernova remnants (SNRs) in the adiabatic expansion phase. By incorporating the Sedov blast wave solution for SNR expansion, the generation and evolution of the magnetic field as outlined by Gull, and the acceleration of relativistic electrons by shocks, as formulated by Bell, a model is synthesized for the evolution of the radio emission of an SNR. A theoretical Σ-D relation is constructed and shown to agree with the observed relation. The implications and limitations of the model are discussed.
