A theoretical program to calculate the basic atomic data required to interpret spectra from the hot regions of the sun is discussed. The use of the spectral lines intensity ratios to obtain electron temperatures and densities in the sun and the use of R-matrix results to study solar spectra are examined. Results are presented from the study of He-, Be-, C-, Mg-, and Al-like ions.
