Calculations are presented for the aperture efficiency, beam shape, and beam efficiency of a number of telescopes used for submillimeter astronomical observations. It is noted that the optics of these telescopes are not optimized for tapered beam illuminations, but have large central obscurations in comparison with radio telescopes. The results indicate that the aperture power edge taper should lie between 10 and 13 dB, or slightly less if the central linear blockage is greater than 0.3. An accurate method is proposed for measuring the size of, and deviations from, Gaussian beam pattern distributions by using astronomical sources with sizes comparable to the beam.
