Initial values of orbital period have been computed for 50 Algol binaries using previously published relations and then compared with observational data. The calculations assumed an initial mass ratio of 1.2, which is the average mass ratio for unevolved binaries. The computed orbital period ratios are compared with the observed trend of period variation in Algol-type binaries. It is concluded that the agreement between theory and observational data is much better when a nonconservative approach to evolution is adopted.
