The rocket-borne spectrometer, based on multichannel spectroscopy by using a combination of an image intensifier and a photodiode array, was developed for measuring the rotational temperature of atmospheric molecules. Its spectral resolution was approximately 1.2 cm. This spectrometer was borne on the S-310-11 rocket, which was launched from KSC (Kagoshima Space Center, 131 deg E, 31 deg N) in Japan on September 7, 1981, and measured the rotational profile of the A-band absorption spectrum of oxygen molecules in the middle atmosphere. By analysis of the rotational profile, the rotational temperature of the O2 (3Sigma g -) molecule was determined to be 218 + or - 1.5 K at the 21 km tangential height, for example. This temperature is acceptable in view of the latest knowledge on the atmospheric photochemistry. Moreover, the accuracy can be considered as satisfactorily good. Thus, the present instrumentation turns out to be effective for the study on molecular dynamics of atmospheric photochemical reactions.
