The IRAS satellite has detected as strong infra-red sources a number of otherwise unspectacular galaxies. Here the author presents optical and near infra-red spectra of a sample of 13 such galaxies from the IRAS preliminary lists, flux limited at 1.2 Jy at 60 μm. All of the galaxies show strong emission lines, 10 are Seyfert galaxies and three have the spectra of giant H II regions. For the Seyferts there is a strong correlation between far infra-red luminosity and the luminosity in the forbidden lines, supporting the hypothesis that the far infra-red emission mechanism is thermal re-radiation by dust in the narrow line region.
