General self-similar solutions for adiabatic blast waves expanding with variable energy at the front into a medium with decreasing or incresing density is discussed. It is found that the solutions are contained between two limit solutions, one corresponding to an infinite density ratio across the front, and the other to infinite energy deposition at the front. The solutions can exhibit remarkable variations as the density changes from negative to positive values.
