Photometric observations of P/Halley obtained at the Catania (Italy) observatory, before and after its passage at perihelion are presented. Gas (CN, C2, C3) and dust production rates and their variations with the solar distance are evaluated. It is shown that the results as a whole are conciliable with a nucleus whose sublimation is regulated by a dark (polymer-like) material. The ejected dust seems also to contain some absorbing material. The comparison of production rates of CN with those of HCN (taken from recent literature) supports, in the authors' opinion, the hypothesis that HCN is a major parent species of CN.
