In statistical studies of open clusters, great attention should be paid to possible field contamination. The importance of correct handling of membership probabilities in the calculation of the virial mass of a cluster is emphasized. Our analysis shows that reasonable virial mass can be obtained only if we use only those member stars with large membership probabilities. Our re-calculation for M11 gives a virial mass of 5094 μ solar, in good agreement with the latest result of 4671 μ solar, directly derived from observed luminosities, giving a virial coefficient of 0.9.
