Scientific paper

The double ring light echo from SN 1987A can be produced either by two clouds with radii 10 - 40 pc and 10 - 100 pc or by sheets of single (or double) supershells with the absorption AV ≡ 0.01 - 0.03 mag. Brightness variations are probably due to absorption of SN light by circumstellar clouds responsible for the well known "bright spot" seen southward SN 1987A.
