The statistical properties of star pairs with wide separations are discussed along with the derivation of single star properties when wide binaries are considered as two stars of the same age observed from the same distance. Random pairs of stars and true physical systems are distinguished between based on the separation between the components and on conditions such as parallaxes and the compatibility of proper motions. Issues related to the origin of wide binaries are considered, including selection effects, the intrinsic distribution of the difference of the magnitudes of the components, and the intrinsic distribution of the log of the distance between the companion and the star.
