The history of the observation of double and multiple stars is reviewed, with emphasis on the impact of technical improvements in angular resolution, photometry, and radial velocity determination. Observational guidelines are discussed, and the need to investigate Selected Areas and the stars of Gliese's catalogue is pointed out. Future avenues of research include the systematic surveying of widely separated components, the adoption of trapezia and common proper motion stars within this family of objects, and the study of the photospheric phenomena of stars and their possible periodicity.
