The NASA Space Telescope will enlarge the observable volume of the universe by a factor of 350, seeing seven times farther toward the edge of the universe than earth-based telescopes and discriminating objects 50 times fainter. The Space Telescope, which will be the largest scientific instrument yet placed in orbit, will have five sensor systems: a wide field camera for cosmological exploration, a faint object camera, a faint object spectrograph, a high resolution spectrograph, and a high speed photometer. The Space Telescope structure makes extensive use of advanced composites for lightness, stiffness, and thermal stability.
