Contrary to current wisdom a very strong seasonal variation of ozone concentrations is observed at Natal (6 deg S) with maxima in the months of September and October. Besides these large oscillations which can be seen in the whole troposphere, the average ozone concentrations of the lower troposphere are comparable in magnitude to those in Europe and parts of the USA, which is also unexpected on the basis of previous measurements in the tropics. These results were obtained from 94 ozonesonde balloon releases.
