Some general considerations about supernovas are discussed. The role of professional and amateur astronomers in the discovery of supernovas is addressed, and sources of confusion in mistaken reports of supernovas are examined. Difficulties with obtaining the exact positions of supernovas are considered, and the designation of supernovas and their inclusion in different catalogs are discussed.
