The development and operation of the VLBA are discussed in a general review. The resolution limitations of conventional radio telescopes are indicated; the advantages of aperture synthesis and very-long-baseline interferometry are explained; the history of VLB networks of existing telescopes is traced; the design of the U.S. VLBA and its Canadian counterpart CLBA is discussed; and the funding delays encountered by the project are considered. Maps, diagrams, and sample false-color images are provided.
