To systematically monitor medium-scale irregularities in the mid-latitude ionosphere, radio astronomy interferometers are used. Preliminary investigations of data samples from the Naval Observatory's Green Bank, WV, interferometer and the very large array facility in New Mexico, are presented. The observation of a typical differential electron content of about 10 to the 15th/sq m over a 35-km baseline is considered. It is shown that a day-night correlation with total electron content values occurs and that the nighttime ionosphere is more disturbed during high geomagnetic activity. The ionospheric irregularities are found to persist for periods of an hour or longer.
