A planetary location technique is described which is based on a correlation method in which information about a planetary region is obtained through an analysis of the correlation function of a reference signal and a signal reflected from the planet. When the reflected radiation is received by a planetary satellite, measurements of the correlation function can yield information about the dependence of the reflection coefficient on the elevation angle and the intensity distribution of the cosmic background over the celestial sphere. In the HF range, the angular sizes of sources used for the location decrease as the frequency increases. It is shown that these sizes can be increased through the use of an antenna with an optimal radiation pattern.
