Recent advances in the astronomy of the solar system are discussed in a lecture presented at the G. C. McVittie Eightieth Birthday Celebration Conference held in Canterbury, UK, in June 1984, with a focus on the application of paleomagnetism to the moon. A number of astrophysical insights based on extrapolation from solar-system astronomy are listed, and the importance of space exploration and sample collection on the moon and planets is stressed. Consideration is given to the discovery of lunar paleomagnetism in Apollo samples, the reasons for the lack of a present lunar dipole field, paleointensity measurements on lunar rocks, evidence for changes in the orientation of the former magnetic field, and the origin in the earth-moon system of the bodies which formed the large multiringed impact craters. Diagrams, graphs, and maps are provided.
