Vacuum-, radiation- and matter-dominated cosmological models are found as solutions of the field equations in Wesson's five-dimensional gravitational theory. These solutions are employed to construct an inflationary scenario according to the variable rest-mass-theory of Wesson. The theory predicts that the rate of change of rest mass decreases exponentially during the inflationary era, it approaches a constant value during the radiation-dominated era, and decreases again towards zero in the matter-dominated era. According to this theory the observed constancy of the rest mass of an isolated system is explained as a consequence of the exponentially decreasing rate of change of rest mass during the inflationary era.
