Optical depths of spectral lines at the photosphere of SN 1987 A are calculated on the basis of a simple model and are found to be in good qualitative agreement with observation. The calculated optical depths will serve as a guide to detailed studies of line identifications in the optical, infrared, and ultraviolet spectra of SN 1987 A during its early photospheric phases. The simple model predicts that spectral lines are stronger in subluminous Type II supernovae than in bright ones.
