An application of the Baade method of supernova distance determination to SN 1987A in the Large Magellanic Cloud yields a distance of 55±5 kpc. The good agreement with the known distance to the LMC means that the absolute emissivity of the supernova photosphere was like that of a blackbody. This result lends weight to a supernova-based extragalactic distance scale, H0 ≈ 60 km s-1Mpc-1.
