A spectroscopic investigation of the stellar population in H II regions of the nearby Sc galaxy M83 has been undertaken, focussing on the positions of historical type II supernova events. A parallel search for Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars in the disk and the H II regions of M83 did not reveal any strong candidates for WR stars in the disk or in OB associations in M83. Deep spectra were obtained centered at the positions of the four definite or probable type II supernovae (SNe) 1923a, 1950b, 1957d and 1968l. The presence of WR stars was detected unambiguously at the positions of the first 3 SNe but not for SN 1968l. The observations support previous evidence of a strong correlation of SNe II events with populous clusters of young, massive O stars and their evolved descendants, the Wolf-Rayet stars, and thus support implications for very high (≥30 M_sun;) initial masses of the type II SN progenitors in M83.
