The ultraviolet spectrum of radiation generated by cosmic rays inside dense molecular clouds is presented, and the resulting rates of photodissociation for a variety of interstellar molecules are estimated. The effects of this radiation on the chemistry of dense molecular clouds are discussed, and it is argued that the cosmic-ray-induced photons will significantly inhibit the production of complex molecular species.
