An attempt is made to derive the physical conditions favourable for the excitation of a bisymmetric magnetic field structure by a galactic dynamo, based on polarization observations of six spiral galaxies (M31, M33, M51, M81, IC 342, NGC 6946), the extended version of Parker's induction equation and the rotation curves. The ionized phase of the interstellar medium is shown to be the location of dynamo action. The strength of the dynamo is mainly determined by the differential rotation and the shear between the gas and the density wave. The theoretical results agree very well with the observations: Axisymmetric dynamo modes in IC 342 and M31 and bisymmetric modes in M33 and M81. For M51 and NGC 6946 bisymmetric modes are expected.
