The question of the high densities inferred from recent estimates of broad line region (BLR) radii of active galactic nuclei is addressed. It is shown that what can be directly obtained from observations is the ionizing photon density i.e. the product of ionization parameter and electron density, which seems to be almost independent of the number of ionizing photons. A lower limit to the density of the inner parts of BLRs is derived, which is about one order of magnitude less than estimates previously given for this quantity.
