A guiding approximation for the motion of lithium test ions in the quiet nightside magnetosphere has been developed. The approximation is used to determine test ion trajectories for the Active Magnetospheric Particle Tracer Explorer (AMPTE) mission. A brief description of the structure of the model field is presented, and conditions are established under which the guiding center theory is valid for all trajectories. Analytical approximations are derived for the ion properties as they cross the tail center plane, and approximate longitudinal invariants of the subsequent earthward motion are given. Comparison of the numerical results showed that the speeds and pitch angles of ions arriving in the ring current region can be predicted analytically to a reasonable approximation and are therefore applicable to any given model of the quiet time geomagnetic tail.
