The Bright Star Catalogue provides (B-V) colors for 8769 stars of visual magnitude less than magnitude 6.5. MK spectral classifications are available for most of those stars; the number for which MK classifications are given or for which a luminosity class can be interpreted or assumed with high probability is 8458. When stars of uncertain spectral class, including variables, are excluded, that number is reduced to 7651. The color distributions were examined for selected MK subclasses to determine whether the distributions can be understood in terms of the expected causes of color variability, including observational errors, the intrinsic variability within a subclass, and reddening by interstellar dust. To facilitate a quantitative analysis, a new statistical model for reddening by interstellar dust clouds was developed.
